Subject: Scary moments driving a 2 Litre
Hi Folks,

I though I better recount a scary moment I had when driving a 2 Litre. A few years ago, a friend and I were comparing each other's cars. I was driving his newly purchased beautifully presented 1928 HC speed model. I put it into gear to go up the road. At about 20 MPH there was an almighty klunk, the back brakes locked solid and the car skidded to a halt. This was a minor road and fortunately no harm was done.

A rear spring had broken. The axle then moved back, and tightened up the cables so the rear brakes jammed on hard. Then I was scared. My friend had driven 100 miles to this event at 60-70 mph on fast roads and the thought of a spring breaking in heavy traffic still frightens me. Our cars are heavy and an uncontrollable skid at this speed is likely to have very nasty consequences!

May I suggest that we remember to keep an eye on our springs and maybe have them crack tested? I always encourage my MOT tester to be ultra-critical on safety items when the test is due and certainly this is one that he would not have picked up if the car had the nice leather gaiters round the springs!

Anyone else have any scary stories?

By the way I use my car(s) a lot. It makes the reliable!
