Hi David
The cradle is the diameter of a standard round base oil can.
It certainly wouldn't be for an inspection lamp. The M45 has fitted Lucas under bonnet lamps. I am not sure if a seperate inspection lamp was supplied with the M45 but likely as there is a two pin plug socket on the dashboard.
If I can I will upload a photo of the cradle.
