Dear Bill,
my feeling is that no special air filter is needed regarding the typically rather low miles per year the cars are used and assuming there is no use in very dusty environment ("off road" in summer). The cars have been living 100´000+ miles without it. The other point is that a very fine air filter doesn´t help breathing of the engine.
