Subject: Distributor and Parts

Hi All Im looking to replace my 3 ltr distributor cap and leads. any comments are most welcome and advice as to were to get the parts?
The advance and retard vacuum pipe is not connected to my 3 litre DB Lagonda’s distributor. I have conflicting reports as to.
It should connected.
It should not be connected?
Which is correct?

Hi Peter , THe vaccum pipe to the distributor should not be connected. Distributor cap try HOLDENS Classic Parts £95 John

I realise this is a little late but I have just joined. I had a Lucas parts business till 1988 and have kept much documentation. For anyone searching for a cap at autojumbles etc., in the future, the following may help. Our distributors on the 2.6/3L ( either 40125A/D, 40125E/F or 40264A/B - all general model DVXH6A ) all used a 417178 cap.
Unfortunately Lucas produced this cap and two others with only a different orientation of cut-out for the LT terminal without any part numbers on them. To identify a 417178 hold the cap upside down with the coil lead outlet at 12o'clock, the LT terminal post cut-out should be at 2o'clock. (Use of the other caps, 415708 and 407279 result in the leads pointing the wrong way.) Not many other cars used "our" cap; Morris MS Six and maybe a Standard.
I have presumed that the searcher could distinguish this group of three from other caps. Can submit picture if needed? Martin

but I bought it from Martin Jay (distributordoctor.com) at slightly higher price (99 GBP plus VAT). He claims best quality, manufactured for him in England, it looks very good (smooth no scratches or holes from molding). I don´t know if the one from Holden is the same quality.

A minor correction to my last entry - apologies - the cut-out in the cap is just to match the semi-circle at the top of the distributor body, not for the low tension terminal. That exits the distributor lower down ! Martin

Thankyou for the dizzy part numbers,

Thinking of putting an Electronic Distributor Conversion Kit in the car (the engine rebuild has worked!) for easier starting and better sparking of those 10 mm spark plugs
thus the part numbers are useful to get the right unit...

Did somebody changed the contacts to an electronic ignition? I looked up the Petronics kits, but it seems to have only a counter-clockwise version for our DB 3-Litre distributor.

You are looking for a regular AM DB2/4 dizzy - Ignitor model for the VB6 engine

Original Lucas DVXH6A unit with part numbers 40484, 40125F, and 40264

If you go with one of these kits, check what is stamped on your dizzy.

Don't forget you will also need the flame thrower kt as well. These are both readily available, worth checking around for best price on the net.

A new set of points and fresh coil always works wonders of course

The number on the distributor reads:
DVXH6A40125E.
Is that the same as the 40125F, you listed in your post?
