Subject: DVLA Problems In September 2017, I acquired a 14/60 HC from a deceased's estate, and registered it with the DVLA, receiving a V5C a few days later. On 20th December, I got from them a V212, advising me that I must immediately Tax or SORN the car. I duly went on-line and tried to tax it, but was unable to because the system couldn't find my MOT. (the car was first registered in 1928, so not eligible for MOT test). The next step was the phone, and I called Swansea, who told me I should get evidence of dating from Glass's Check Book, fill out a V10 and send them to the Taxation Team at Swansea. Well, the Glass's Check Book has no records before 1937, so what do I do now?

Subject: Re: DVLA Problems You might find it possible to continue with your application online despite no MoT. If I recall correctly, DVLA haven't updated their site in so far as old cars are concerned regarding MoTs; hence it states MoT required...when we and they know it isn't. In practice I've found you just continue, and the system "forgets" it wanted an MoT. Might be there is some reason your new application isn't progressing other than this, in which case hope it gets resolved soon. Perhaps a letter from the Club archivist might help. Laurence

You might find it possible to continue with your application online despite no MoT. If I recall correctly, DVLA haven't updated their site in so far as old cars are concerned regarding MoTs; hence it states MoT required...when we and they know it isn't. In practice I've found you just continue, and the system "forgets" it wanted an MoT.

Might be there is some reason your new application isn't progressing other than this, in which case hope it gets resolved soon. Perhaps a letter from the Club archivist might help.

At least there will be a human being on the other side of the counter! Even with a Christmas queue it will probably be quicker than negotiating with Swansea on the phone! Good Luck Bill

Sorry to hear of your difficulties,
If under taxation class it says "Historic Vehicle" you should be able to tax your car at a main post office by presenting the V5C, a valid insurance certificate and filling in a form there at the Post Office.
At least there will be a human being on the other side of the counter!
Even with a Christmas queue it will probably be quicker than negotiating with Swansea on the phone!

As Bill suggests, take your V5C and proof of insurance to a Post Office. As long as the V5C shows a pre 1960 date of registration, the Post Office will tax the car FOC and then send your V5C off to DVLA in order for them to amend the taxation class to Historic. That is what they did with my 1923 Lagonda 11.9 that had been off the road since 1989. If you have further problems you may need a Dating Certificate (showing year of manufacture) that the club may be able to provide having checked the club record card for the car. Good luck Mark

Hi Steve,
This is almost certainly a problem with the taxation class on the V5C as your car has been off the road since before the Historic tax status was introduced around 1997.
As Bill suggests, take your V5C and proof of insurance to a Post Office. As long as the V5C shows a pre 1960 date of registration, the Post Office will tax the car FOC and then send your V5C off to DVLA in order for them to amend the taxation class to Historic. That is what they did with my 1923 Lagonda 11.9 that had been off the road since 1989.
If you have further problems you may need a Dating Certificate (showing year of manufacture) that the club may be able to provide having checked the club record card for the car.
