Subject: Lagonda M45 Tools

I am interested to know what was included in the standard tool kit of an M45? Can anyone help? Is there a list from an original handbook?

A further question relates to a fitting that sits on the passenger side bonnet landing panel on my car. It is towards the bulkhead inside the bonnet when closed. It is a small circular frame with a spring loaded clip and is screwed to the landing panel and looks very original. Would this be for a can of oil or an oil can for general maintenance?

As ever advice gratefully received

Regards
Mark

Dear Mark,

I’m sure someone with an M45 will be able to help you. My LG45 came with an almost complete toolkit. I would hazard a guess that the tools were identical for the M and LG but someone might prove me wrong. There is a list of contents in the handbook and I can send you photos if you contact me.

Thanks David,
I do have the LG45 tool listing and you may well be correct in that the M45 toolkit is very similar. Of course the LG45 doesn't have a seperate car jack!
I am hoping someone can give a definitive list for the M45 and solve the mystery of the oil can(?) cradle on the nearside bonnet landing panel.

Hi Mark,

How big is th cradle? I would have thought it would be to hold an inspection lamp. Is there a two-pin plug socket fixed to the bulkhead?

Hi David
The cradle is the diameter of a standard round base oil can.
It certainly wouldn't be for an inspection lamp. The M45 has fitted Lucas under bonnet lamps. I am not sure if a seperate inspection lamp was supplied with the M45 but likely as there is a two pin plug socket on the dashboard.
If I can I will upload a photo of the cradle.

On my M45 it had something similar and in my research would definitely be for an oil can. I found that in fact a reasonable modern simple oil can (with spout etc and spring trigger) fitted almost exactly in the "cradle". I hope this helps.
And I painted the oil can a "gungy black" so it looked quite original in the end !

Many thanks Bill,
That solves the mystery. I will now search out a battered oil can to place on the near side bonnet landing panel!
Best Regards

My copy not immediately to hand, but Arnold Davey's relevant "Lagonda in Detail" book might well have a photo illustrating this area and correct pattern oil can.

Hi Lawrence

Sadly none of the standard texts on Lagonda have any helpful photos showing the nearside bonnet landing panel. I have also looked through google images to see if there are any useful reference photos there.
What that showed was many of the best restored cars have replacement bonnet landing panels which I guess are not too difficult to make up being flat aluminium.

We now know there was an oil can in that area, question is what type was it?

Hi Mark,
Frustratingly I've just also proved the "in Detail" bit isn't really true, having searched the book in vain for photos of the V12's front shock absorber adjusters! As an aside, I've just looked through the original M45 road tests I have. These show drawings (not always reliable, the V12 chassis drawing doesn't bear much similarity to the cars as produced) of the bulkhead area viewed from the front, but only the SU pumps to be seen in that area.
If you can wait, surely an M45 with the correct can will turn up at the Annual Gathering.
