I saw that Gert van Logtenstein is offering a rebuilt 3 ltr engine asking 12500 EUR and a gearbox at prewarcar.com

For Sale again
3 litre engine

It looks like good value, so what is the snag?

Chaps,

There may not be a snag at all.

I believe this engine came in with the vast hoard of parts that David Ayre bought from Ivan Forshaw. I was at David's when the current owner picked it, or one like it, from him.

Remember that in the late 1950s and 1960s there were many unloved and rotten 3 Litre saloons that found their way to their last resting place at Ivan Forshaw's establishment. In many cases they may have been quite low mileage cars and of course the engine is a large lump that can be saved and stored fairly safely. I have no knowledge about what work has been done to this particular engine, but they are so well built in the first place that perhaps it was still in good order when it was dismantled and checked over, which is presumably what happened after it left David Ayre. Also remember that around this time, Lagonda offered a nine year guarantee, on condition that cars were sent back to the Works every three years for a check-over. They are very solid engines.

The challenge is that many more engines than cars survive so the question to ask is what to do with it if you do not have a car for it to go into.
