Subject: Parcel shelf modification...?

I am rebuilding the rear parcel shelf and would value you opinion on descreatly modifying it to take two speakers - bad idea? I plan to change it from the original by replacing the vinyl with leather to match the dash. I will also add slots for reel inertia belts.

Just as a point of interest, the parcel shelf cannot be installed properly with the rear screen in place.

And you'll need some packing pieces to insulate the shelf from the frame, to stop it drumming; it is only plywood! More speakers sounds like a good idea

Thanks David, the one I removed used the vinyl folded round to stop vibration - may try the same method. I was thinking earlier (while stripping out bits and pieces) that I will make sure I place lots of felt at pinch points around the interior to avoid sqeeks and rattles...

It's been a heck of a job fabricating the new parcel shelf to the exact spec as the original and using all of the original brackets and fittings - I'm on my second attempt already! Fortunately I have a good supply of quality ply of every size and thinkness to see me through this restoration...

It may seem odd the way I'm renovating the car but I'm simply restoring parts as they are removed to reduce the risk of me forgetting how things go together and to avoid components going missing...

Personally I wouldn't put the speakers in the rear shelf. There is too much happening there already & noise congregates in the rear. Yes its possibly the easiest & cheapest solution. The best stereo surround sound will come from good door speakers! Regards, Guy.

Thanks for the reply Guy. The original speaker (which is not that original) has totally had it so I may install a good quality single speaker to keep it looking original. I think I will use it as a sub only (this sounds very boy racery!) so the quality is not so important. I'm not massively keen on door speakers where there were none as it will involve cutting the door cards, I may go for the footwell side panels as one already has a speaker. I managed to get another chrome AM grill so they should look original...

How have you got on with your PHH44's?

Hello Christian. I have gone for speakers in the footwells & the sound quality is very good. Like you one was already there & the other was very easy to do. I managed to get a meshed speaker frontis that is very good to the originals.
AlfaRetro have been excellent on the Solex Service kits & are getting me some throttle seals & idle jets. Best wishes, Guy
