Subject: should I replace my BTH magneto with a Scintilla ( which one?)

Mark's magneto service in Connecticut just called and he has gotten round to checking out my original BTH mag for my M45. He says they were not a very good mag, something about weak magnets . He said it will work but would be dicey on a 3000 mile road trip. I had heard about a later Scintilla as a replacement and was wondering what model number it would be as he said he has the appropriate one in stock. I am aware that a different 'cradle" must be fabricated and am wondering what challenges to expect with that as well.

I am no specialist in magnetos but you can remagnetize the magnets to bring them up to old strength (that is what I would do) and I think your magneto service workshop should be prepared for this. Here is one company I found on the internet, there are certainly many more: http://www.brightsparkmagnetos.com/services/index.htm. You see this remagnetizing job on their list and it costs 18GBP. Certainly your magneto service will check the coils and rewind if necessary.
