Subject: LG45 Carbon Clutch Release Bearing
Morning all
I am in need of a replacement release bearing for the Borg and Beck style clutch on my LG45.
Club is out of stock currently.
Does anyone have one complete or just the carbon insert they are prepared to part with or perhaps trade for something else they need?
For reference the details are:
Carbon insert
Outside diameter = 3”
Bore = 2 3/16 “
Depth = 11/16”

Holder
Spigot diameter = 9/16
Width across outside of spigots = 4 5/8
Width across inside of spigots = 3 7/16

Thanks
Bill

Surely there must be some other car which used a carbon thrust washer of the correct dimensions - or is it a very difficult size ?
Maybe something which was fitted to a lorry ?
If not quite the correct size then machine to fit as I presume you have the original Lagonda holder for the carbon washer.
Alternatively get a lump of carbon and machine one up yourself (carefully) out of the solid ?

Many years ago I removed the V12's water pump, and found that the seal consisted of a brass belows with graphite carbon ring. That was pretty knackered, but the bellows section was fine. I did some research and found this company: http://www.morgancarbon.com/gb/

I spoke with their technical department...and it turned out that they had supplied Lagonda originally. They kindly sent me a "sample" free of charge. The sample was big enough to make several seals!

So, if a replacement assembly can't be found, it could be well worth contacting this firm.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
Have been looking but so far have not found the right size.
Yes one could turn down one that is over sized OD provided the bore is not too big and that would be easier than machining from solid.
I did successfully machine the outside diameter of one before but boring it out without the tool chattering and breaking the carbon is difficult and I was wanting to get this back together as soon as I can and just hoped that somebody might offer one up.
Thanks for the tip about Morgancarbon ... that is the supplier that a local mechanical seal company I used to work for some thirty years ago sourced their carbon seal faces from ...so a good idea, and I feel embarrassed for not thinking of them myself!
I have been thinking of getting a batch of carbon rings produced and offering them to the Club.
Are there any LG45 owners that would want one too ?
Best Regards
Bill

Might also be worth considering that this part could well be common to other vehicles. For example, my Riley RMB has a Borg & Beck clutch with a carbon release bearing. I have a spare to hand, and just in case they are the same part, the casting has embossed: "BORG & BECK CO LTD 0.(or Q)44 EN6 40416.
Ideally, it would help if you could find someone with an early post war Borg & Beck catalogue.

There is a dumper truck that runs the exact same carbon ring AND cast iron holder
BUT I can't remember which one sorry.
I will do some research and try to find the details and publish it. Will be too late for this post but may help in future.

Regards,
Julian
