Subject: LG6 Starter Motor
Hello,
During my investigations into my clutch issue (posted elsewhere), the shaft holding the pinion for the starter motor broke off at the starter motor housing.

Will it be possible to dismantle and have another shaft machined? Any tips for dismantling? I'm thinking that removing the front plate would be a good start.

Regards, Mike

Other members may also reply to this but I think you will find that a new armature will be extremely expensive. However there is an alternative starter motor which you can fit - normally used on an XK Jaguar I believe - XK 150 ? Coincidentally it is called a Lucas M45 starter. Here a link to one on EBay at the moment :-

However can someone else confirm that I am correct about this ?

I believe the alternative starter motor is the Lucas M45A. It benefits from having the later pinion arrangement which is far more reliable than the earlier design. It is the norm to upgrade unless maintaining originality is important to you (only a trained eye will know the difference). I have an M45A type fitted to my LG45.

As regards your clutch problem check the clutch release bearing as it may have worn or broken up.
Hope this helps
Mark

Thank you both, Bill and Mark,
The Lucas M45A replacement option sounds good to me, I'll do some investigations locally to see if I can find one here in Australia.

Mike, I suddenly remembered that I actually have some photos of my own Lucas M45 starter motor (when it was off the car) I can send these if it helps you to know what you are looking for. I have tried to attach them to this post but it will only allow me to attach 200KB. I cant work out how to reduce the size of my photos and then post them !
If you would like to have copies of these photos send me a private message and I will then send them to you. There are 3 photos and each is about 600KB
