Subject: starter motor cable getting very HOT
Hi All
I’ve been having trouble with my starter with fully charged new batteries. The starter motor is running very slowly and seems to be laboring. I’ve tightened all the connections but the cable from the solenoid to the starter is getting very hot. I have a new solenoid which a can fit,
Could it be: earth return, the cable between the solenoid not heavy enough, The solenoid it’s self, starter motor, have you any other thoughts or observations?

Peter

Hi Peter,
when and how did it run last time, what did you change in between?, mounting of the starter, cables?

Hi Peter My first line of attack is to check over my earthing as my starter has always been lazy. I found this morning the earth bonding between the gearbox and the chassis has come apart.

If you find that the gearbox-to-chassis earth was not the problem Peter, we think that it is a resistance causing your heating, which could be in the cable from the battery, more likely the armature, commutator and/or bushes in the starter.

Hi Mark and Jim. I intend to make a new earthing cable that attaches to the gearbox and continues down to the mounting bolts of the starter and make a good contact point on the bulkhead I will at the same time confirm the condition of other cables especially the one from the power cut off to earth if this is not the answer then it’s out with the starter motor and threaten it with a big hammer! If that do’s not work hit it a bit harder Ops! That comes from the days of Empire silly me!
