Subject: automatic radiator slats V12
There was some discussion about this topic in the 3 litre prewar section already - here is some addition for the V12 (and LG 6).
My radiator slats were not working, some slats had discoupled, some rust and the whole thing was set wrong to keep them open permanently.
I have removed the thermostat. Removed the 4 nuts holding a bracket then it can be pulled down, it is not in direct contact with cooling water, so this can stay in the radiator.
The thermostat has the trade mark "Smithermostat". I tested it in the kitchen, boiling water and adding cold water. It is fully open at 85°C and fully closed at 60°C. I do not know if there are others available. After putting it back I will see how this range can be adjusted with the driving arms. One image shows the hole in the radiator where it was mounted.
The other image shows the thermostat on top of the radiator with chrome mask removed. This removal can be done with the radiator left in place. Some screws attach the mask to the radiator. And then there is the big slotted nut under the radiator cap to be removed. The main lights have to be turned to the sides to remove the mask.
Probabaly I will remove the part holding the slats too and put an electric fan between radiator and slats (keeps it from getting to hot in town, especially after driving a bit faster before)
When I have put all back and adjusted I will add here if it works again. Any recommendations before are welcome.
Peter
