Subject: Oil Pump and Feed Pipes
Hello,
I am in the process of tearing down the S4 engine in the LG6, having removed it from the car. Has anyone ever torn down an engine to the extent of removing the oil pump and the feeder pipes in the crankcase? The fittings look very awkward to get to, and even if you get a (special?) tool to them, there doesn't seem to be any space to rotate them to loosen the fittings.
By way of background, the engine has been removed because number 5 ran a big end bearing, so we're embarking on a bottom end rebuild, something to which I'm unaware the engine has ever been treated, and the car has been in the family since 1966...
It is a massive lump, the Meadows 4.5, and I ended up removing first the head, then the block and then the crankcase. I don't know whether this is the conventional process but it seemed a safer bet in my case. While I initially planned to install the rebuilt engine back in one piece, I don't know if that's going to be possible, so I'd be very interested to hear from anyone with experience of this.
Many thanks,
Mike
