Subject: Emotional Outburst
Peter, I hope you'll allow your wonderful forum to be used for psychotherapy. I've just passed an entire day trying to make an oil-tight joint where the feed pipe enters the exhaust rocker gallery and I'm just about gibbering. Can anyone tell me why the 2 Litre was designed as it is ? It has to be simple sadism. I first noticed it with the clutch, where removal would be far simpler were the chassis cross member to be just 1 cm further back. Then the water pump - to change one takes five gentle minutes on any other engine I know but here takes hours of persuasion and occasional brutality. Now this **** joint, where fixing would be trivial were the casting over the magneto drive to be any other shape than it is.

Maybe it's supposed to be character building.

Thanks Peter, I feel better now.

Hi Julian.

Do I detect some sympathy? I certainly appreciate that your costings have to make due allowance for tranquilisers with the lunchtime sandwiches and probably the occasional rest cure in a peaceful sanitorium halfway up an Alp.

As to the joint - well yes and no. No external leaks but excess oil coming from the gap between the union thingy and the internal wall of the gallery. But she started and ran nicely (yes, I did change the fuel) but then I noticed that the oil pressure was off the clock so shut down hurriedly to think about it. Sticking relief valve? Anyway, time for a stiff drink.

All the best,

John
