I recently spent some time watching auctions "live" over the internet. (Exciting and no cost). There have been very many auctions (to many cars coming to the market?). I remarked some general trends:

Prices exceed estimates with famous previous owners (typically from show business)
Example: Silver Shadow shooting break http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/20930/lot/338/
belonged to John Enwhistle (The Who) estimate 14-18k, made 44k incl. buyers premium
Or racing history: a scruffy Invicta 4 1/2 low chassis http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/20931/lot/249/ made 953k incl. premium

Strong bidding on perfectly restored cars (to suprising results): Example: E-type 3.8ltr flat floor http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/20931/lot/215/ reached 225k incl. premium
Mercedes 280 SE DHC built 1970 http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/20931/lot/208/ made 163k incl. premium

Prices rising for: better than new cars typically powerfull postwar cars but not very rare (Jaguar E-type, Mercedes SE Drophead, Aston DB4 and 5, Ferraris before 1970), cars with famous previous owners or racing history, micro and bubble cars

I think the trend to perfectly restored cars will continue because less amateurs are able to restore the cars themselves or at least do major parts of the restoration. (Generation internet)

some seemed good value for money but of course I have not seen them in reality
