Subject: Chrome GB Number-plate

Have just given my car its first good clean, and the Aegean Blue paint work is looking pretty good overall, a pleasant surprise, given the inital dreadful state of the car.

On the back of the boot at rhs, there are 4 small holes with rubber grommets still attached. Looks like there was a chrome GB plate, inside a circle ?

My build sheet indicates this is correct and one was fitted originally.

Has anyone got a good picture of how it should look, especially the GB letters.

I have looked on eBay etc, and they don't look correct.

This is what my badge looked like, it has four fixings too but on the other side from yours. I have partially rested it now but one of the letters needs rechroming where I bent it . I did have a good look around for authentic GB letters but moden ones look pretty rubbish and originals are difficult to come by for this period. I will post a close up photo later with some dims...

I believe these were made by a company called Ace based in the Midlands, who also made wheel trims as well amongst other items.

Yes they do appear to be ACE GB badges who also made the Rapide wheel trims - nice bit of research Simon!

I missed a good auction for 4 unused wheel trims:

See this pictures, like new and sold for 46 pounds with partial original Ace box, I will be more careful in future..

They were manufactured by Cornercraft of Coventry who also manufactured other forms of wheel embellishers as well.

Mine are good, but need a fair bit of elbow grease to get the shine back on them, will have to pass them to one of my two assistants for polishing..

Ideally, I would like to find four replacement chrome hub covers, mine all require re-chroming, any suggestions for these.

But the GB plate with simple oval surround, is a hard one to find, and will keep looking, I don't want a full oval plate, just plain and simple as yours is.

I note that they were an optional extra on MGA's, MG Y type, Wolsey, etc etc

Looks like a 1950's advert, and this was a fair bit of money of money to spend on this extra...

I have actually ordered the embossed GB which I have a link to in my last reply. The size and style is perfect even though it is embossed so for £10 I thought I would see what it was like.

I have new wheel trims which I (as well as a few others) bought from here however they will only make them in batches of 12...I think. There should be a thread on this topic somewhere.

I am actually now only after the chromed hub caps, my trims are being clean by my two assistants on the kitchen table as I write. I have replied to this on the right topic thread.

I thought you had a GB plate already, or was it not useable ?

Assistants or slaves? My GB will be fine once I've rechromed the letters but I was intrigued by it being the right letter style, oval shape and only £10. It'll look good on the workshop wall...

We don't have slaves here, only two willing assistants, paid of course with the right sort of money - chocolate!

I will wait for the right GB plate to come along, a shame that they don't make it without the oval plate. Saw this one and it really captures the style of the 1950's and 60's.
